Crocodiles are amazing creatures found on different continents of the world. These reptilian predators are probably the closest we have to a living dinosaur, which has helped make them famous animals. This popularity has many people wondering how to learn how to draw a crocodile to help celebrate their admiration for this animal.

Drawing a Crocodile
Step 1:
We’ll start with the eyes and the top of the head in this first step of our guide to drawing an alligator. To draw the eyes, you can draw oval shapes close to each other, as shown in the reference image. Make sure to leave some space at the bottom of the eyes! Once you’ve drawn the eyes, you can use curved lines above them for the eyelids, then draw a line back for the head’s start.
Step 2:
You can start drawing the crocodile’s snout in this part of your crocodile drawing. Instead, you can use a curved line underneath the look on the left, serving in the area you left at the base of the watch. You can then refer to the reference image to use more curved and rounded lines to form the muzzle. This part can be a bit tricky, so be sure to follow the guide image carefully!
Step 3:
For this step of our guide on drawing an alligator, we will focus on the back of the alligator. There will be a series of triangular tips along the length, and you can use a line between each to form the back and the start of the tail. You can then utilize a curved line for the back of the seat. Don’t fail to draw the back of the mug too!
Step 4:
We will add the legs and belly of your crocodile design in this next step. The legs are short and rounded, with sharp claws at the end. The crocodile’s front leg will extend forward, while the back leg will bend backward. Then you can draw the bottom of the tail and the belly to complete this step.
Step 5:
In this step of our guide to drawing a crocodile, you can draw the feet on the other side of the body. These will appear relatively small to give some perspective. Next, use dots for the pupils and draw nostrils.
Step 6:
Every crocodile requires a jaw full of pointy teeth, so let’s count some to your crocodile marking in this effort! You can draw a slightly jagged line for the mouth and add sharp teeth above and below. Once you’ve drawn the mouth, you can draw the additional details shown in our reference images, such as the lines on the lower belly and more on the face and legs for more skin texture.
Step 7:
We will draw a few last little details before moving on to the last step of this guide on how to draw an alligator. We use small lines all over the body to create the texture of crocodile skin. You can then remove uneven bars to create a grassy ground for your crocodile. Before proceeding, add all the details you want to this image! Perhaps you could enlarge the background to show what type of environment this crocodile lives in.
Step 8:
Now that you have finished your crocodile drawing, another fun step is to add some fantastic colors! We used a green and yellow color scheme for our image, but this is a stage where you can let your creativity take over! You can use a similar color scheme to ours, but you can also use any other color you like!
You can try using more subdued and realistic colors and bright and vibrant ones for a more stylistic image. Don’t forget to color the background and add details that you also drew! What artistic mediums will you use for your image? If I were coloring this, I would use watercolor paints for a softer image, but whatever you choose will be beautiful!

We recommend you do your best to draw it as it appears in our guide. If you find drawing some of these details difficult, you can remove them or simplify them. What you change or remove will depend on your specific difficulties. Once you’ve created a more comfortable version of the drawing, you can always create new versions with some details restored.
Experimenting is a great way to master drawing! Although this crocodile drawing is unrealistic, you can use a photo of a genuine crocodile to help you draw. To do this, you’ll want to find a photo with a relatively similar pose to our guide. Even if you can’t find a similar one, any photo of a crocodile will help you draw specific details and proportions of the crocodile. Also, you can use it to help you draw a more realistic crocodile if that’s your preferred style. Finally, adding background elements and details to this crocodile sketch can be a way to make it easier.
It may seem unclear, but adding extra elements can be used to hide complex parts of the drawing. For example, you may have difficulty drawing the legs of the crocodile. If so, you could draw a lake setting for this crocodile. This way, the crocodile could be partially submerged in water, and you wouldn’t have to draw the part you struggled with.
